Since this just happened to me "AGAIN" today, I thought I'd mention it.The belt on our Birds, and probably other belt drive machines as well, has a tendency to pick up dirt, sand, etc. from the street and dirt roads and shuttle it all up behind that chrome cover over the the front drive cog and over flow bottle.Normally,it should just fly off the belt and that would be the end of it.But on the Bird, and for some reason, it has a tendency to collect and build up behind that cover which could cause some unneccessary grief. So what I've been doin is pullin that cover off every few weeks,[four bolts which use an 8MM socket hold it on and takes about 5 minutes or so start to finish],and blow it out with air ,or rinse out it with a garden hose.I took it off a couple weeks ago and it looked like a kids sand box.lol Of course this is winter around here and the cities and towns have spread a fair amount of it all over the streets. So it's just a simple maintenance that you guys might wanna preform every now and then to prevent any unwanted embarrassment. lol Dave!!!

Great Advice Dave!!
I found half the desert and much of the gravel from the dirt road riding Pekka has done recently behind his cover.
The first hint was the two lower fasteners made a grinding noise when coming out.

If there's a T-bird in the garage then your either sick, broke or missing the time of your life.
Get out and ride that Bird.

This is also my first belt drive machine. And like anything else,I'm learning too as I go along and then pass that info on to the rest of you guys.If the info can save just one person some unneccessary grief and maybe a few bucks at the same time, then it's worth it.Whadaya think??By the same token,I read what you guys post about your Birds and learn more about my scooter which is what I believe this site is all about and why I came on board here.Actually,I have "daz" to thank for pointing me here cause he's the guy that told me about this site.SO IT'S ALL HIS FAULT.lol lol Anyways,it's called sharing information to help out anothers. Then passing it along and so forth. And it appears to be workin pretty good.I'm glad I came on board.Thank you for accepting me. Dave!!!

I like to tinker a bit, thankfully we have two bikes or the bird would take the brunt of this. I usally take all the covers and seat off ( not engine cases } and inspect. Like I've said I have a limerock drive and the road to the hiway is dirt so this is a weekly chore. Thank god it has a belt not a chain, Chain wax and grit is a nasty mess.

My first belt drive too and I was a little wary, but I'm used to it now. I do have a belt question for you guys with more miles on. How long do they last? A service mgr at a local dealership told me they've been having to put new belts on at 17000 miles. The service guy at the place where I bought mine says that's baloney, the guy just wants in your wallet. I'm sure all kinds of things factor in but I was under the impression these things last a long long time. Mine still looks brand new, but I'll certainly be looking behind that cover frequently. Thanks Dave.

A question was asked as to just how long or how many miles a belt is good for.According to the shop where I bought my scooter from, they say,up to 80,000 miles.Possible, but not probable. The SM just tells just ya to monitor the condition of the belt and replace it if you see damage, cracks, or excessive wear.So there's really no set mileage for belt replacement.I'm alittle over the 13,000 mile mark right now and the belt still looks good.

IMO,it all depends on several factors:[ONE] The type of roads you drive on.Dirt, sand, winter driving etc.raise hell with everything. So that means ya gotta keep the belt, the drive cogs, and that area behind that cover, clean. As you may or may not recall,I did a thread about removing the cover periodically and cleaning all the dirt and sand that collects in there. If that debris is allowed to stay there,it will find its way back onto the belt, which already has more road debris on it,which naturally, will wear the belt out even faster, not to mention the two drive cogs.So keeping the belt, the cogs, and the area behind that cover clean, will obviously play a part in belt longivity. [TWO] In addition to removing and cleaning behind that cover,I have also learned to rotate the wheel everytime I wash the bike, rinsing the belt and cogs as I go,and then shooting some water in behind that cover to rinse that area as well.Ya stiil gotta pull the cover periodically to thoroughly clean that area, but rinsing it helps to keep the amount of debris collected back there to a minimum.[THREE] Keep the belt within the recommended adjustment parameters. And [FOUR}How you drive your machine. In other words, the harder you drive it,then naturally,it's gonna stretch. All these things do make a difference. So I guess you could call this"BELT MAINTENANCE"lol

I will soon be buying another belt for back up just like I do for tires.I have already bought the swing arm alignment tool so that when the belt needs replacing,I'll be able to drop the swing arm and change the belt,ASAP. Dave!!!
